High value canned fruits and juice for the local, regional and export markets

Providing market access, and job opportunities to smallholder farmers through an expanded processing capacity to meet growing local, regional and international market demand

The main objectives of the project include:

  1. Expand processing capacity of Vintage Farms to take advantage of increasing local, regional and export market demand processed fruit products
  2. Create market opportunity for farmers and develop capacity of 200 smallholder farmers and processing staff
  1. Expand processing capacity of Vintage Farms to take advantage of increasing local, regional and export market demand processed fruit products
    • set up a semi-automated canned pineapple processing unit with a production capacity of 9,000 cartons / month (equivalent to approximately 168 tonnes/month)
    • increase current range of processed fruit to include canned sliced pineapples
    • increase total production to 6,000 cartons of fruit juice
      1. 5400 cartons/month of bottled fruit juice for the domestic/local market
      2. 600 cartons/month of bottled fruit juice for the regional market (Burkina Faso)
    • produce 4800 cartons/month of high value canned sliced pineapples for export to Europe
    • 6000 cartons/ month of high value canned pineapples for the domestic and regional and export market
    • develop and launch at least 5 new product lines, with testing inputs from Food Research Institute
  2. Create market opportunity for farmers and develop capacity development of 200 smallholder farmers and processing staff
    • support 200 farmers to undergo GAP training and obtain Global GAP Certification
    • secure and sign agreements with 4 international and 4 local buyers of processed pineapple products
    • create additional employment for 50 personnel in fruit processing (38 women of which 30 will be youth; and 12 men)
    • increase income of pineapple farming communities by GHS10,000 per extra acre of pineapples processed for the domestic market and GHS15,900 per extra acre of pineapples processed for the export market (canned sliced pineapples)
    • recruit a food scientist as production / quality assurance manager to man factory operations
    • conduct quality assurance (QA), safety, health and environment (SHE), as well as equipment training for processing staff
    • acquire HACCP certification for processing facility

The project will produce the following key deliverables at the end of the implementation period:

  • A semi-automated canned pineapple processing facility (equipped with handing washing systems, and changing rooms) established and operational in the Nsawam area
  • HACCP certification obtained for processing factory
  • Off-taker agreements signed with 200 smallholder pineapple farmers, and option two Global GAP certification obtained for at least 30 farmers
  • A minimum of 160 tons of products processed per month for at least 18 months
  • A minimum of 5,400 cartons / month of bottled pineapple fruit juice for the local market; 600 cartons / month of bottled pineapple fruit juice for the Burkina Faso market (regional); 4,800 cartons / month of canned sliced fresh pineapples produced and exported to Europe
  • Five (5) new product lines developed and launched
  • A borehole reservoir constructed and in use
  • Employment created for an additional 50 factory personnel (38 women, and 12 men) in addition to the 12 women already employed
  • At least one food scientist recruited to supervise quality assurance and production operations
  • 236 tons of pineapple fruit purchased from farmers per year
  • Annual income of 336,960 USD accrued to farmers
  • Four new agreements signed with international buyers and 4 new ones with local buyers for processed pineapple products bring the total local and international buyer agreements to 14 and 6 respectively

1,382.4 tons of processed products exported to per annum, generating 754,036.36 USD in revenues to Vintage Farms per year
